I think I lost the transmission on my JK today. I lost D, 2 and R. I made it to certified transmission in 1. It made no noise it just acts like it is neutral. The light on the dash says I am in gear though. The transmission light on the dash came on. The fluid is full. I was shifting from drive to reverse when it happened. 2nd gear will work until it needs more power, it went out going up a little incline then nothing worked, not even 1. I shut it off, turned it back on and 1 works again. It sounds electronic to me, I hope. I have the following upgrades that may affect the trany:

3" lift
1.25" body lift
super chips programmer using the transmission pressure increase, I think. I'm not really sure what it does but it took the hesitation out between shifts.
35" tires

This sucks because Steve was going to help me put on my winch and bumper on tomorrow that has been staring at me for two weeks on my garage floor.

Has anyone else had anything similar happen? Any ideas?

Any codes?
Did the fluid smell burnt?
Did you try to remove the program?
Any recent mud trips?

Hopefully it is something simple.

No burnt smell in the fluid. No trips for at least a month. It had two codes, I stopped in at a buddies repair shop and he cleared the codes. I did not write them down, he said they were both internal transmission codes. The codes did not come back on the way to Certified Transmission. I really miss my jeep, my wife said I should have married my jeep...

I did get the recall, but the tranny had no time to heat up. I appreciate all input on this!

I heard today that the planetary gears are out and it will require a new or rebuilt transmission. Ouch! They said it is most likely not due to abuse but a part failure. They said the JK has the same transmission as the Liberty and they have seen a lot of Liberty's with the same extact problem at similar mileage. They did offer me an upgrade to their Road Ripper 1000 which increases pressure and adds 20% more clutch plates and a bunch of other upgrades for about $350.00 extra. First, is this what you would do if your transmission failed at 70.000 miles and second is $350.00 a good price. I have a hard time having them put the same thing in that failed so soon. Also, I've monkeyed with every other part so why not this one...

Here is a link to their Road Ripper 1000 specs:

70k on an '07? I definately do not drive enough. I'm about to turn 24k on my 05. Sorry to hear about your transmission woes!

lots of tranny's have gone out on the JKs...I guess Jeep didn't learn. Do you have the lifetime powertrain warranty?

It may just be a vacume line or a sensor. We had a sensor go out on our blazer and I thought the tranny was shot, it costed something like 20 bucks for the sensor. good luck.

I am proud to say I had one of the first JK's in town, unfortunatly this means I had a 36 month/3 year warranty and a crappy interest rate... I should have traded it in, I probably would have saved money without any warranty issues. I know for a fact now I would have saved money overall with the transmission going out. They started the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and 0% interest 6 months after I got my JK.

You may want to talk with Jeep, complain to them they may help you out somehow. Especially since certified said it was more than likely part failure rather than what you do with it. I had a dodge ram that was well out of warranty and the tranny went out and they ended up covering it since that problem was so wide spread. Might be better than a couple thousand dollar repair bill.
